Many fans have their own dream comic book movies that they would want to see come to life. That said, some Hollywood insiders feel the same way, and I recently had a chance to ask Skyscraper director Rawson Marshall Thurber what his ideal superhero project would be during an interview about his upcoming Die Hard homage. Wasting no time answering, Thurber told me that he would want to make a movie about Hulk fighting Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The director explained:
Oh, very very easy. For me, my dream project is Hulk vs. Wolverine. The Lindelof comic. That's number one on my list, and if Kevin Feige gives me a call I will mow his lawn for a chance to make that picture.
Hulk and Wolverine have fought in the pages of Marvel Comics numerous times over the years. In fact, Wolverine's first appearance as a character was in a battle against The Incredible Hulk. Seemingly interested in building upon that mythology, Rawson Marshall Thurber wants to get his hands on both characters and direct an adaptation of the 2005 comic book run, Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk, which was written by Lost's Damon Lindelof. Moreover, the mention of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige makes it clear that Thurber wants to do this project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thus making its viability contingent upon the eventual completion of the massive Disney and Fox merger, which has the potential to merge the X-Men franchise with the MCU.
Of course, while Hulk and Wolverine have fought several times over the years, the emphasis on Damon Lindelof's comic also seems notable because it features one of the most gruesome moments in Marvel history: Hulk ripping Wolverine in half during combat. Based on that image alone, it's hard to imagine a version of Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk hitting the big screen with anything less than an R-rating. That said, given the success of Logan, it's not entirely impossible to imagine a version of this tale receiving a film adaptation someday. A Hulk vs. Wolverine movie would also seemingly necessitate the recasting of Wolverine, as Hugh Jackman stepped down from his legendary tenure as the character in 2017, but given the history that these two characters share, this story might actually be the best possible option to introduce the world to the next actor who will play the clawed mutant anti-hero.
We will bring you any relevant updates related to all of the projects developing over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as more information becomes available. Only time will tell if a Hulk vs. Wolverine movie will ever get off of the ground, but until then, watch out for Rawson Marshall Thurber's latest directorial effort when Skyscraper debuts in theaters next month on July 12.
