DC Has A Plastic Man Movie In The Works

If you follow news about DC movies regularly, then you're well aware that there are a lot of projects in development for the DC Extended Universe. Seriously, a lot, as in nearly two dozen! Not all of these projects will see the light of day, but every now and then a new one is added to the mix, and today brings word that there's now a Plastic Man movie in the works. Talk about stretching yourself thin!

Warner Bros has tapped screenwriter Amanda Idoko to pen a Plastic Man movie, which is described as a "comedic action-adventure." No specific details about Idoko's Plastic Man story were revealed, but apparently her being hired caps off a six month-long search on Warner Bros part to find someone for the gig. According to sources who spoke with THR, Warner Bros is intending for this Plastic Man movie to stay "true to the light-hearted and even silly tones of the character." The project is still in the early stages, so there's no directed attached yet, but New Line's Bob Shaye will executive produce.

Interestingly enough, this isn't the first time that a Plastic Man movie has been in development. In the early 1990s, The Wachowskis wrote a Plastic Man script, and over a decade later, they planned to make it themselves and have it ready to go for a 2009 release. It was even rumored that Keanu Reeves would play the stretchy hero. Obviously this movie never happened, and rather than be self-contained, it sounds like this new Plastic Man movie will take place within the DCEU.

Plastic Man was introduced in 1941's Police Comics #1 from the Quality Comics imprint, but it wasn't until 1956 that he was acquired by DC Comics. Originally known as Eel O'Brien, he was a small-time criminal who was exposed to an unidentified chemical liquid while pulling off a late-night heist. This chemical gave Eel's body an elastic malleability, allowing him to stretch in all shapes and sizes, control his density and shapeshift, and other benefits of his strange physiology have included regeneration, invulnerability and aging at a far slower rate, if at all. However, his weaknesses include extremely temperatures (both cold and hot) and certain other chemicals.

While he's chiefly known for being comic relief within the DC universe, he is definitely among the most powerful heroes, and for a time he was a core member of the Justice League. Outside of the comics, Plastic Man led his own series, The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show, from 1979 to 1981, and he also popped up on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice and Justice League Action.

As for Amanda Idoko, she's previously worked on the short-lived ABC series The Mayor, and her first feature film script, Breaking News in Yuba County, is beginning production soon. Evidently Warner Bros is confident in her ability to deliver a solid (rubbery?) Plastic Man tale, but we'll have to wait and see if this movie ends up moving forward That said, the prospect of Parks and Recreation's Ben Schwartz bringing Plastic Man to life sounds way too good to pass up.

Sylvester Stallone Says He's Done Playing Rocky

Sylvester Stallone has been playing Rocky Balboa for more than four decades. The character has evolved from an underdog to a champion to a mentor of another young fighter, and Stallone seems to feel that with Creed II it might be time for Rocky to finally step out of the ring. The actor, writer, and director has posted a statement to Instagram which seems to indicate that he's done playing Rocky. According to Stallone...

While Sylvester Stallone doesn't come out and state that Creed II will be the last appearance of Rocky, a video which accompanies the statement above on Instagram has Stallone saying this is probably his "last rodeo." While it's sad that an era has come to an end, at the same time, as Stallone says, that day was going to come eventually, and Creed II isn't a bad way for it to end.

Rocky would debut in 1976 and the film would go on to garner Oscar nominations for Sylvester Stallone as both the writer and lead actor for the film. The movie would win three Oscars including Best Director and Best Picture. Five sequels would follow and it seemed that following Rocky Balboa in 2006 the story of Rocky was finally over, but then Creed would come along and bring both Stallone and his character out of retirement.

This isn't the first time that Sylvester Stallone has claimed that he was done with Rocky, so it's always possible that something could come along to entice him back, but, at the same time, the Creed films aren't about Rocky Balboa and at some point the character should probably step aside so that the story of Adonis Creed can be told without any unnecessary shadows being cast over the movies.

While Rocky may finally be retired, Stallone isn't quite done with all of his classic characters. Production is currently underway on Rambo: Last Blood, which will follow the former soldier John Rambo one more time. Of course, based on the title, one assumes the plan is for this to be the swan song for Rambo as well. Once that happens then Stallone will be done with both his major franchise names. The time is right, both have served his career, and the fans quite well.

If you haven't seen Creed II yet, you can now do it knowing that you're saying goodbye to an old friend. When you last see Rocky Balboa on the screen there, you may never see him again.

Why Social Media Is So Important In Blumhouses Truth Or Dare, According To Lucy Hale

The world has changed significantly over the last decade, particularly with regard to the prevalence of social media. That change has seeped into the filmmaking world, with a notable emphasis on the evolution of the horror genre. In fact, during a recent interview to discuss Jeff Wadlow's horror thriller, Truth or Dare, Lucy Hale opened up to CinemaBlend and explained that social platforms (mainly YouTube) are fundamental to the film because they represent the arc of her character. Without delving into spoiler territory, the actress told us:

I think, especially for Olivia's character, because you start off in the beginning of the movie where her platform is her YouTube channel. This is how she helps people and reaches people, and then, I can't give the spoiler at the end of the movie, but she completely goes against everything she stands for to help the people that she cares about. I think that it's sort of like, a metaphor for social media, that the outreach is so massive, and I like that's one of the strongest messages within the film.

It's not a matter of Truth or Dare necessarily being a story about social media, because it's clearly not. Having said that, this is a story about a group of modern, tech-savvy college students who use social platforms to enhance their everyday lives. For Lucy Hale's Olivia, social media is particularly important because her character is framed as someone who uses the burgeoning technology to extend the reach of her philanthropic efforts. However, when things start going wrong, the film presents the heroine with moral quandaries and opportunities to use social media as a means of self-preservation.

This represents a stark contrast from the old days of horror movie storytelling, in which technology stood in the way of logic and provided characters with easy ways out of specific situations. Rather than trying to find ways to get around the presence of technology and keep things like computers and social media out of the hands of our heroes, Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow instead runs in the other direction to embrace and weave it into the story as an element of the Truth or Dare universe.

It's also worth noting that elements of this emphasis on social media have popped up in other Blumhouse-produced horror films over the last few years. Movies like Happy Death Day and Unfriended have also kept their heroes locked in with technology instead of keeping it out of their hands, and that has shown a notable transition from traditional norms of the genre as a whole.
