How Annihilation Was Built For Repeat Viewings, According To Alex Garland And Oscar Isaac

How Annihilation Was Built For Repeat Viewings, According To Alex Garland And Oscar Isaac

Warning! Spoilers to follow for Annihilation. Come back later if you haven't seen it yet. With hints of Kubrick and Tarkovsky, Alex Garland's Annihilation is a serious mind-trip of a movie. It has a high concept plot -- a group of scientists enter a mysterious zone to discover the origins of a strange phenomenon -- but by the end of the story it successfully bends your brain into a pretzel. In a purposeful way, it's a movie that is meant to inspire debate about its meanings and themes, but as I recently learned from the writer/director, audiences will get a lot more out of the movie on a second viewing:

There's things I don't think one could see on a first viewing that would give a different perspective on a second viewing. I mean, just one very simple example is a conversation that happens between Natalie Portman's character of one her university professor colleagues at the bottom of the flight of stairs very early in the film. And the second time you watch the film, that conversation is then loaded with other meanings, and you realize they're not having the conversation they appeared to be having. It's a completely different thing.

This was just one example that Alex Garland tossed out when I had the chance to speak with him and Annihilation star Oscar Isaac earlier this month during the film's Los Angeles press day. I asked the two men if the movie was specifically designed so that audiences will get new readings in repeat viewings, and Garland said that that is absolutely the case -- adding that there are things that movie-goers won't notice until the second go-round.

After discussing the conversation between Lena (Natalie Portman) and Daniel (David Gyasi) at Johns Hopkins at the start of the film, Alex Garland namedropped two more little mind-blowers that you may not have seen in Annihilation this past weekend:

You might notice the tattoo on Oscar Isaac's character's chest. You might notice the physical construction of the house that they find inside Area X, and the house of the family home. All sorts of just odd little filament lines that can be drawn together.

Having now seen Annihilation a second time personally, I can confirm that these are two very cool details. For starters, the tattoo that Oscar Isaac's Kane has on his chest is a bear (y'know, the creature in the movie that screams like a human and winds up tearing Anya's face off). Also, the house that they discover at the end of the second act -- the one with all of the flower people -- has an interior that looks exactly like Lena's house.

Oscar Isaac also offered his thoughts on the question, comparing the movie to his previous collaboration with Alex Garland: 2015's Ex Machina. He pointed out that not only are there little plot threads and Easter eggs in the film, but that there are certain character moments that have a different kind of emotional resonance when you understand the larger context in which the movie puts them. Said Isaac,

[There's] also scenes where you can sense that there's a heaviness, but you're not really sure why. On the second viewing they take on much more significance in a way. Ex Machina had a lot of the similar things where you have one experience watching it, and when you go back to watch the second time after you know everything that's going on it's a very different experience - very exciting and interesting too. But all these different things become, you know, get revealed.

As a person who absolutely loved Annihilation, I was excited to return to the film after getting this recommendation from Alex Garland and Oscar Isaac, and I did not leave disappointed. The movie is a truly fascinating piece of work, and I'd highly recommend returning to it when given the opportunity.

Annihilation is now in theaters everywhere in the United States, and will be hitting Netflix in a few weeks internationally.

Groundhog Day Was Originally Written As A Much Darker Film

Groundhog Day Was Originally Written As A Much Darker Film

Harold Ramis' Groundhog Day is a movie that many people watch annually on February 2nd, but this year has a special significance. The 1993 film is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018 - and it's certainly a feature worth celebrating and investigating. As die-hards know, it's a feature with a complicated backstory where a lot of changes were made throughout production - and apparently that included a draft with a much darker opening for the story that just dived straight into the narrative. Producer Trevor Albert recently explained,

The opening was darker. It required the audience to sort of go with that [premise]. I loved that. I think it probably would have been a very good movie in the original form, but I don't think it would have been as acceptable.

The dark first act that Trevor Albert is referring to is a version of Groundhog Day that didn't waste any time letting the audience get to know Phil Connors or understand how he arrived in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Instead, according to an interview with Variety, the original draft of the script threw audiences right into the middle of the time loop. Apparently Albert was a big fan of this approach, but it wasn't popular enough to make it to the final draft.

Adding in his thoughts, screenwriter Danny Rubin offered a detail that one might guess could have led to the approach being axed: evidently there was an idea that would have seen Groundhog Day feature an omniscient narrator explaining things to the audience throughout the story. Said Rubin,

There was a voice-over that kind of helped the audience along, so they wouldn't get too disoriented.

Rather than risking audience disorientation or a narrator crutch, Groundhog Day axed both, and may very well be the better movie for it. There is a wonderfully natural way that the story progresses in the film, with Phil Connors first adjusting to and understanding his situation, then exploiting it, and then feeling crushed by it. The earliest draft would certainly have been very different, and may have had some great ideas of its own, but it's hard to argue with the finished product.

As alluded to - and covered in Variety's piece - Groundhog Day was a movie that went through a lot of revisions during its development, mostly because of clashes regarding tone. While director Harold Ramis envisioned the story to be more in line with his other feature efforts like Caddyshack and National Lampoon's Vacation, star Bill Murray had a much greater appreciation for the more philosophical elements of the narrative and pushed for their inclusion. By the end of production, the experience created a deep rift between Murray and Ramis and the two men didn't speak for nearly 20 years. Thankfully, they managed to patch things up before Ramis passed away in 2014.

Ultimately Groundhog Day is truly a brilliant film because of the way in which it balances both of Bill Murray and Harold Ramis' demands. It's not only outrageously funny, but it's also a genius existential exploration that builds off the work of thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Friedrich Nietzsche. If you didn't watch it on February 2nd this year, the good news is that today is actually the official anniversary, so do yourself a favor and pick out your Blu-ray/DVD and give it a watch.

Groundhog Day takes something of a darker turn when you look at it that way; I believe Columbia Pictures got nervous at this kind of mind-fuck showing up in one of their romantic comedies and put out the official line that Phil was only stuck in there for two weeks or something like that. Avengers: Endgames VFX Artists Took A Lot Of Lessons From The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy

Weta Digital has been in the digital effects game for over 25 years, and the companys most recent contribution to the cinematic landscape was in Avengers: Endgame, specifically through the explosive final battle. During my recent interview with Weta visual effects supervisor Matt Aiken, I asked him whether there were any non-Marvel movies Weta had worked on that inspired the work done on Endgame, and he informed me that there were quite a few parallels between the final chapter of the Infinity Saga and what he and his team had done on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Aiken explained:

A bunch of us, myself included, go all the way back to Lord of the Rings at WETA Digital. That had giant battle sequences, predominantly CG battle sequences as well. It was interesting, we really felt like we were back in the territory of Helms Deep and the Battle of Pelennor Fields at times on this film, which was fun for a bunch of us whod worked on those films as well. And were using some of the same techniques and software in Lord of the Rings. Were using MASSIVE, which is the crowd-simulation software that we developed in house at WETA Digital to do those battle scenes for Lord of the Rings to do the crowd simulation work for Endgame as well. Its a way more developed version of that, but its still plenty of the same software.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has delivered some amazing battles over the last 11 years, but for now, Avengers: Endgames final conflict ranks as the biggest yet. All the major MCU heroes, from the ones wed followed along with since the beginning of the movie to those who were dusted in Avengers: Infinity War coming back to life, as well as their armies of allies, fighting the 2014 versions of Thanos and his forces. Who knows if/when well ever see a clash like this again in the MCU.

While a battle of that scale is novel for the superhero franchise, for Matt Aiken and his team, it was familiar territory for them, because even though its been nearly two decades since the Lord of the Rings trilogy launched, they were using the same software to create these large crowds back then as they did for Avengers: Endgame in the last year or so, albeit with many improvements.

However, the trick with creating these kind of fights isnt just plopping large crowds onto a battlefield; its also ensuring that the combatants can stand out amidst all the action. Whats the point watching two sides duke it out if everyones actions look the same? That would be boring. Matt Aiken and his Weta team figured that out during their time on Lord of the Rings and incorporated it into Avengers: Endgame. As Aiken put it:

And then things we learned from Lord of the Rings that we were able to bring to bear here as well. The one thing we always like to do is when we have these big battle scenes is not to just treat everybody the same, so in Endgame, weve got multiple different flavors of army on both sides, both Thanos side and our heroes side. Weve got Wakandans, Asgardians, Ravagers, sorcerers on the heroes side, and weve got Chitauri, Outriders, Sakaarans, the Black Order on Thanos side. And we want to preserve the individual fighting styles for each of these sub-armies, if you like, so that when we have a clash, we can tell if its a bunch of Outriders dealing to some sorcerers, or maybe weve got some Wakandans who are able to take on a whole lot of Chitauri.

The MCU and Middle-Earths sagas are incredibly different from one another, but when it comes to VFX work, as Matt Aiken laid out, a lot of the same methods were applied to both franchises. Given technological advancement, obviously these methods were more refined for Avengers: Endgame, but overall, its like the old saying goes: if it aint broke, dont fix it.

While Weta Digital handled VFX for all the Lord of the Rings movie and the subsequent Hobbit trilogy that followed a decade later, Avengers: Endgame marked just the fifth MCU movie the company worked on, the previous ones being The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War. Given what Weta pulled off in all those movies, Endgame especially, I suspect Marvel Studios will continue relying on its services for future installments.

Avengers: Endgames final battle definitely gave viewers a lot of moving pieces keep track of, from Captain America finally wielding Mjolnir to the women of Marvel coming together to transport the Infinity Gauntlet to Scott Langs van. Even with the good guys getting that surge of reinforcements, Thanos nearly succeeded in destroying the universe and replacing it with a new one, but Tony Stark managed to swipe the Infinity Stones and channel their power to turn all the Mad Titan and his minions to dust, though it came at the cost of his own life.

As for the Lord of the Rings franchise, obviously its time on the big screen has come and gone, but the Middle-Earth mythology will soon be explored on the small screen. Amazon has a Lord of the Rings TV series in the works, although instead of just adapting the original novels again, it will tell new stories set before The Fellowship of the Ring. Given that Weta primarily works on movies, as well as Amazon probably wanted its series to look different from the movies, its unlikely the New Zealand-based company will be brought in to work on this show, but I suppose anything is possible.

Avengers: Endgame is still playing in theaters, so be sure to read CinemaBlends review of the movie and stay tuned for more coverage on it. If youre curious about what the MCU has coming up, check out our Marvel movies guide. As for the Lord of the Rings series, it doesnt have an official premiere date, although it might be ready by 2021.

These Avengers Movies Are Being Called A Culmination, Heres What That Means

Needless to say, there are going to be spoilers in the following article, so turn back now if you want to head into Avengers: Infinity War knowing nothing at all.

It's a word that we heard time and time again, from every member of the Avengers: Infinity War creative team. "Culmination." This movie -- and, to a certain extent, Avengers 4 that will follow next summer, serves as a culmination to the MCU, the ongoing comic-book cinematic series that began with Iron Man back in 2008. But what, exactly, does that mean?! It was the last question that we posed to directors Joe and Anthony Russo after a long day of filming, a long day of learning everything that we could about Infinity War while on the movie's set. And they told us:

Anthony Russo: I think as storytellers, what it means for us is that while you're always looking for cataclysmic events in a film, to change a character [or] to challenge a character, and to sort of explore who that character is and test who that character is, it gave all of us in this film an opportunity to figure out, well, what were those ultimate tests for these characters, you know what I mean? To go one step further even than how you would normally test the character in one of these films, because we had the freedom to sort of think of it in many cases as sort of a final test.Joe Russo: If you were to think of the Marvel universe over the last ten years as a book, this is the ending of the book. And then, there may be new books written. But this is certainly the ending of this book.

So ominous. We learned that information nearly a year ago, and it has been very difficult to sit on it for this amount of time. But since we learned it, we have picked up more pieces of information that shape the narrative. While Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 will be the "ending of this book," as Joe Russo calls it, there are other movies on the docket that will continue the MCU, from a Spider-Man sequel to a third Guardians of the Galaxy and a planned Black Panther 2.

But this means that the MCU as we know it I ending. Which likely means -- though we can not confirm -- that core members like Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) might be hanging up their capes, and passing the baton to a new phase of Avengers. What will the battle against Thanos lead to? West Coast Avengers? New Avengers? There are a number of ways Marvel Studios can go. For now, the future is unwritten, even though the past is coming to a close.
