The Conjuring Inspiration Lorraine Warren Has Died At 92

The Conjuring Inspiration Lorraine Warren Has Died At 92

Since the spine-chilling release of 2013s The Conjuring, a successful franchise of sequels and spinoffs has ruled the horror genre. The interconnected universe is inspired by the lifelong work of Lorraine and Ed Warren (portrayed by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson in the Conjuring films), who have investigated high-profile hauntings and chronicled supernatural phenomena. At 92, Lorraine passed away in her sleep on Thursday night.

The Warrens own New England Society of Psychic Research announced the news Friday morning (via Fox 61). Lorraine was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1927 and was a self-proclaimed clairvoyant and light trance medium. She and her husband founded the society in 1952 and conducted investigations into reports of paranormal activity, such as the Lindley Street poltergeist, West Point ghost and Amityville Horrors (which spawned 17 films).

The couple wrote 10 books together and traveled across the world lecturing on their findings. Ed Warren passed away in 2009 at 79 years old. One of their early cases was for Annabelle in 1968, a Raggedy Ann doll that was reportedly possessed by the spirit of a child named Annabelle Higgins. It inspired the Annabelle movies, which will continue with Annabelle Comes Home this summer. The upcoming film will see the first appearance of the Warrens in the spinoff series, thus making it a homecoming for the Conjuring universe.

The Conjuring is based on their assistance to the Perron family in 1971, who experience frightening paranormal sighting in their farm home in Rhode Island. Lorraine Warren served as a consultant for the first movie and even had a cameo in it. She seemed to have bonded with the actress who has portrayed her for the past six years, as Vera Farmiga took to Twitter this morning to honor her following the news of her passing. Take a look:

The couple looked to be the gritty real-life Ghostbusters who certainly made a mark on the subject matter for many belovedly scary horror movies and various supernatural and psychic phenomena. The Warrens also inspired the The Nun spinoff which became the highest-earning Conjuring film in 2018 when it racked up over $365 million worldwide. A sequel for The Nun is on the way, along with The Conjuring 3 and The Crooked Man.

Lorraine Warrens death also comes on the same day of the release of The Curse of La Llorona, the first Conjuring spinoff film that does not tie to the couples paranormal investigations, though it finds itself in the universes timeline between the two Conjuring films.

Although Lorraine Warren was not a filmmaker herself, she will have a lasting impact on Hollywood as her experiences continue to capture the interest of audiences and be immortalized through the dramatic portrayal of her by Vera Farmiga, who will play Warren again in Annabelle Comes Home, coming to theaters on June 28.

How Video Games Will Continue To Play A Vital Role In Wreck-It Ralph 2

How Video Games Will Continue To Play A Vital Role In Wreck-It Ralph 2

In case it wasn't obvious from the title, Ralph Breaks The Internet is a sequel that will break away from the setting of its predecessor. While Wreck-It Ralph was entirely embedded within the world of arcade games, the upcoming follow-up will take heroes Ralph and Vanellope into the World Wide Web and websites like eBay and OhMyDisney. If you're concerned that the movie is leaving its roots behind, however, you shouldn't sweat it, as co-director Rich Moore is still promising a key part for video games to play, starting with Game Central Station:

Well, it definitely colors their 'small town.' We will see a lot of those characters that we met in the first one as citizens of their little town that they live in. That's the place that Ralph loves. So it's definitely an aspect of it.

Back in early August I joined a group of reporters on a trip to Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California for a behind-the-scenes look at Ralph Breaks The Internet, and throughout the day learned all about the world-building behind the upcoming sequel. After multiple presentations, however, I noticed that one aspect of the film not really being discussed was the video game element -- so I brought the subject up later in the day when I had the opportunity to sit down with directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston and producer Clark Spencer.

Considering the amount of incredible world building featured in Wreck-It Ralph, it would have been crazy for the new movie to totally move past it -- and the good news is that it isn't. Litwak's Arcade is where the story begins, reuniting us with not only Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) but the various residents of their games, Fix-It Felix and Sugar Rush.

Of course, the leads ultimately wind up going from Game Central Station to the internet, but it should be noted that the gaming side of things doesn't stop there. In case you didn't know, online games are a pretty big thing, and Phil Johnston confirmed that the characters will be involved with it after being transported through the router -- though he couldn't say too much about the subject at the time. Said the filmmaker,

There is this whole huge plot of online gaming that we didn't talk about today that we will talk about soon - but that's a massive part of this story, is online gaming.

Since August we have heard about a couple of developments with Ralph Breaks The Internet, with one of the most significant being the introduction of the driving game Slaughter Race and its lead character, Shank (voiced by Gal Gadot). It's a very different environment for Vanellope von Schweetz, who is primarily used to driving cars through gumdrop mountains and over chocolate lakes, but the footage that we've seen from the film so far suggests that she will have no problem adjusting to the new, tougher atmosphere.

Going back to the metaphor that he introduced earlier, Rich Moore put it simply:

It's kind of gaming in their little town, and then gaming in the big city.

You can take a gander at the world of Slaughter Race in the most recent trailer for Ralph Breaks The Internet -- though be warned in advance that it looks like the game is going to be at the center of a serious and sad conflict between Ralph and Vanellope, threatening their relationship with real possibilities for the young driver's future:

If you're like us and super excited for Ralph Breaks The Internet, the best possible news we can offer at this point is that the movie is almost here. Disney will be releasing the animated sequel in theaters on November 21st -- and be sure to be on the lookout between now and then for more about the film here on CinemaBlend, as we'll have more interviews coming with the stars and filmmakers.

12 Easy Ways Movie Theaters Can Improve In 2019

12 Easy Ways Movie Theaters Can Improve In 2019

Movie theaters are in near-constant states of innovation these days, with theater chains all around the nation trying various ways to get audiences back into theaters more often. While cinemas with bars and recliner seats are nice, there are some other easy ways I think that theaters could innovate in 2019 and make the overall movie experience better for a whole lot of people.

Heated SeatsMovie theaters tend to run cold to accommodate large crowds, or possibly save money. Whatever the case, theaters can get chilly, and with luxury seating becoming commonplace in theaters, heated seats are a simple luxury that could easily fix a chilly theater. As is the case with most heated seats, they could be optional to have on or off, so everyone could somewhat control their level of comfort without affecting others. Voila, no more freezing in theaters.

Theater SushiFor all the food and drink that movie theaters are serving, it's surprising sushi hasn't been offered by more cinemas. Rolls can be pre-packaged and chilled in advance, and theatergoers could get their rolls served in nacho bowls with soy sauce in the cheese bowl. Sushi is delicious, filling and doesn't make a lot of noise, so it's an ideal theater snack. Patrons already pay sushi prices for subpar snacks, so why not actually pay for quality food?

Pre-Screening Mobile GamesIn a world where pre-roll theater programming is now the norm, it's time for theaters to offer some additional pre-film entertainment. Mobile games that allow patrons to compete against each other in movie trivia or other kinds of competitions would be great and make the barrage of ads folks are hit with before the film bearable. Plus, it would drain the phone batteries of those in the theater, which may encourage them to stay off them during the film.

In-Theater Discounts For Future Screenings Of Upcoming FilmsLess people are going to the movies, so theaters should focus on ways to bring those who attend back there as soon as possible. One way of doing that may be by offering discounts of yet to be released films while attendees are in the theater. This will encourage moviegoers to purchase more tickets and come back for films they may not have seen had they not gotten a deal on it.

Required Reserved Seating For Parties Of 6 Or MoreIt's time we address an elephant in the room of the theater experience and call out the people who stroll in five minutes prior to a movie's start and are flabbergasted that they can't find seating for themselves next to the eight others they came with. Theaters could simplify this issue by asking groups buy in advance and have sections specifically reserved for large parties who wish to sit together. Everyone wins.

Order Ahead On Concession SnacksMovie concession lines are the worst and by far one of the ways many theater chains still need to innovate. The ability to order via an app or tablet would be wonderful and allow patrons to order and go onto bathroom trips, grab seats, and other activities that waiting in line to order snacks prevent. A text could inform folks when their order is ready, and they just pick it up with no fuss.

Cut Down On Concession OfferingsAnother reason ordering snacks takes so long is because people have way too many options for theater snacks. The list of menu options at theaters has grown astronomically long, and 2019 needs to be the year that theater chains go through and slice their menu offerings in half to streamline the process and help people make up their minds sooner. That said, I'm still completely fine with sushi being an option, so don't get this twisted.

More Event ScreeningsTheaters have gotten better at offering more anniversary screenings of films, special events and concerts, but things could improve. Finding a participating theater for some of these events can be hard to do in even big cities, and those in smaller towns likely won't drive hours to another city's cinema to attend these events that are sometimes more expensive than a movie. More accessibility to special events may draw more people, and increase their odds of returning.

Better Rewards For Good Theater EtiquetteSome theater chains offer incentives on their apps that allow viewers to gain rewards for good theater etiquette such as leaving their phone on silent. The rewards for doing so are ok, but a chance at bigger stuff may encourage more people to participate. After all, trying to train attendees to have better manners will probably make the experience better overall, which will again encourage folks to return to the theater more frequently.

Hosting Events That Tie-In With MoviesMany theaters I've been in recently have a space for birthday parties, but rarely have I seen or even heard of a birthday party happening within one. Instead, cinemas could utilize that space for local fan groups to schedule group screenings, and then have a space to hang and discuss the film after. With theaters now offering alcohol, this seems like an obvious way to tie the two in.

Trash Baskets On ChairsIt's time to stop relying on the average cinema attendee to dump their trash in the bin after the film ends. Disposable trash bags attached to the cupholder would be a quick way for people to get rid of trash without making a mess, and ensure the next round of folks don't walk into a sticky mess a worker didn't catch. Once the screening is done, a worker simply pulls the bag and replaces it.

Post-Credits Scene WarningsCinemaBlend will always let readers know when to stick around for a post-credits scene, but in those rare moments where a loyal reader may forget to check ahead of time, a short message that confirms audiences should stick around for another scene would stop the general confusion that ensues when the credits start. That way everyone can chill in their seat or leave as opposed to clogging up hallways and standing to see if one appears.

Those with other simple suggestions to improve the cinema experience in 2019 or beyond can share their thoughts in the comments below. For more on one particular theater innovation that's had a rough run as of late, check out what Moviepass will offer its subscribers in 2019.

The smartest theater owners aren't waiting to see if their audiences will stick around. Instead, they're thinking ahead for the newest ways to draw in viewers and keep them coming back. Some of their ideas might be frivolous; others are fantastic and weird and wonderful. Keep reading and you'll see why movie going might never again be the same.
