Marvel Is Not Planning To Bring T'Chaka And Captain Marvel Together

When Captain Marvel arrives on screens next year it will take place in the 1990s of the MCU. Considering Marvel's most recent film had a sequence in that period, one might wonder if these two heroes could cross paths. Unfortunately, if you were hoping for a Captain Marvel/Black Panther 90's era team up, now or in the future, it won't be happening. Marvel's Kevin Feige, says there are no plans to build on the MCU in the 1990s, which is not to say we couldn't see other time periods represented in the future. According to Feige...

I would say no. I mean, in terms of Captain Marvel and a young T'Chaka in '92, no. That's not where we're headed. But we would talk about the ancestral plane sequence [in Black Panther] where, towards the end of the movie, T'Challa takes the herb again and encounters his father, where he's like, "Hey, man. We've kind of screwed up, and I want to change it." There's that moment where all of the ancestors come behind T'Chaka. We would joke and go, "I want to see ... what's their story? What's that story? Who was Bashenga, the first king of Wakanda? Who's that third to the left, behind T'Chaka? What was their story in Wakanda in 1938?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe connects in some strange and interesting ways and some of the breadcrumbs that get set out lead to places that we don't always expect. However, if you thought that Black Panther's 1990s intro sequence might have, in some way, been meant to hint toward the fact that Captain Marvel will also be set in the 1990s, that is apparently not the case. Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige certainly leaves open the door to potentially seeing other Black Panthers in future movies, at least theoretically, but it doesn't appear we'll be seeing much more of the era of T'Chaka wearing the vibranium armor.

Kevin Feige tells Entertainment Weekly that part of the inspiration for Captain Marvel was to set the film during a period of time where nobody, not even Nick Fury, was aware that superpowered individuals existed. To that end, if the movie was full of superpowered people, it would likely defeat the purpose, as it would be hard to accept that nobody knew these people were around if the movie ended up full of heroes. If the Black Panther is out fighting bad guys in public, it becomes tougher to believe that Wakanda had successfully kept itself hidden until the modern day.

While seeing T'Chaka as the Black Panther would be cool, it's not like there's going to be a shortage of people for Captain Marvel to team up with in the MCU. While her exact role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 is unclear, we know she'll show up at some point, and when she does, she will very likely team up with the current Black Panther, and that will be just as good.

Avengers: Infinity Wars Extended Gag Reel Features Its Own Mary Poppins Reference

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a massively popular franchise for a decade, and recently validated ten years of moviegoing with The Russo Brothers' Avengers: Infinity War. The shared universe's main characters united in the action-packed and emotionally devastating blockbuster. And the shared universe as a whole will likely never be the same after Thanos' finger snap of death. Every frame of the film has been dissected in the following months, an activity which gained recent momentum with its digital and Blu-ray release. Along with plenty of new insights by The Russos, owning a copy of Infinity War also grants you access to the gag reel, which is being released in snippets online. The newest clip just dropped, and it featured Robert Downey Jr. going full on Mary Poppins in the middle of his battle with The Black Order in New York.

If that didn't put a smile on your face, then you're as cold as Ultron. Because despite the relative grimness associated with Infinity War due to Thanos' ultimate victory, it's fun to see the cast of A-List talent cracking a smile and having some fun on set. The stakes were no doubt high for everyone, but luckily the mood still had plenty of levity.

While it's fun to watch actors like Scarlett Johansson and Chadwick Boseman break character and laughs things off, Robert Downey Jr.'s spontaneous dance number has got to take the cake. Standing in the rubble of New York City as Black Order members Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian arrive to procure the Time Stone, Robert Downey Jr. breaks into his own version of "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" from Mary Poppins. That's more, Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Ruffalo seem thoroughly psyched about it, and start busting moves of their own.

Hardcore Marvel fans will know this isn't the first Mary Poppins reference that has snuck into a major blockbuster. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 featured Michael Rooker's Yondu screaming "I'm Marry Poppins, ya'll!", in one of the sequel's most bizarre moments. It's since gone viral and been the subject of countless memes, with Rooker and the crew enjoying the bit just as much as the fans. As a reminder, you can check out the scene in question below.

With Mary Poppins now an official recurring joke in the MCU, we'll have to wait and see if any more references to the practically perfect nanny pop up in the post-Avengers 4 landscape.

Another highlight from Infinity War's gag reel has to be the take-ruining goat seen in the opening sequence. As T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and Okoye (Danai Gurira) speak with a newly mind control-free Bucky Barnes, the goats in the background decide to add their own dialogue to the scene. While trying to work through the distraction, Gurira is the first one to break, and the giggles begin to take over them all. At least Thanos' coming arrival didn't totally ruin the mood on set.

For the record, the first Infinity War trailer played in front of The Last Jedi. Since Disney doesn't have a Star Wars release in December this year, it's harder to peg what Avengers 4 will be playing with. How Aquaman 2s Villains Could Become Even More Of A Threat

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS for Aquaman are ahead!

For Arthur Curry's first standalone story within the DC Extended Universe, Aquaman understandably threw the character's two most well-known villains from the comics at him: Ocean Master and Black Manta. The former served as the main antagonist, the latter was billed as the secondary villain, and by the end of the movie, both men were in rough shape. However, while Ocean Master, a.k.a. Orm, was thrown in Atlantean prison after being defeated in combat, Black Manta, a.k.a. David Kane, was saved from death by Dr. Stephen Shin, who was seen sporadically throughout Aquaman. These two are now allies and expected to be Aquaman 2's villains, but there's only so much they can accomplish together. To raise the stakes, Aquaman 2 should use the N.E.M.O. organization to make Black Manta and Shin even more dangerous.

Although N.E.M.O. (Nautical Enforcement of Macrocosmic Order) was introduced during Dan Abnett's run on the Aquaman comic book series just two years ago, within the main DC Comics timeline, the organization has existed since 1872, though it would be another century and change before it finally consolidated its power, to the point that it controls the world economy. N.E.M.O.'s ultimate goal is to control the world through the oceans themselves, and one of the ways its members have managed to make progress with this is by acquiring Atlantean technology, allowing them to control aquatic life, create hybrid soldiers and even insert coral suicide implants into its operatives.

The person who leads N.E.M.O. is known as The Fisher King, although when Black Manta was recruited into the organization, he swiftly killed the current Fisher King, assumed control and later slaughtered every other high-ranking member who was dissatisfied with him being in command. N.E.M.O. was already planning on trying to discredit Aquaman in the eyes of the public, which would subsequently result in Atlantis being viewed as a hostile power and the surface world declaring war on the submerged kingdom. Despite his violent takeover of N.E.M.O., Black Manta decided to keep this plan in motion, and it was almost successful. But in the end, he was yet again defeated by Aquaman, and N.E.M.O. was seemingly destroyed, or at least temporarily neutralized.

Now let's look back at Black Manta and Dr. Stephen Shin within the DCEU. Black Manta proved himself to be a formidable opponent in Aquaman, but even all that Atlantean technology Orm gave him, including that customized, laser-blasting helmet, he was defeated once again by Arthur Curry. We can reasonably assume that Black Manta will give Arthur another good fight in Aquaman 2, but now that Arthur leads his own nation, Black Manta is incredibly outmatched.

In Stephen Shin's case, we don't know that much about him since he was mainly shown failing to convince fellow TV panelists that Atlantis exists, but clearly, like his comic book counterpart, he's accumulated a solid amount of knowledge about the underwater civilization. But even with that knowledge and Black Manta on his side, there isn't that much he can make happen.

Together, the chances of Black Manta and Dr. Stephen Shin posing a real threat to Arthur Curry in Aquaman 2 are slim. But what if they weren't alone? What if this partnership leads to the two men forming the DCEU's version of N.E.M.O.? Yes, in order for this to work, N.E.M.O. would need to be a fresh creation rather than having existed for a long time, but it can still serve the same function overall. The world at large may not be aware of how close it was about being invaded by Orm's forces, but if Shin can find likeminded individuals and convince them how close humanity came to being attacked by water-dwelling beings, he can then gather up support and resources, turning him from a crackpot conspiracist to leader of a cabal set on learning the secrets of what lies under the oceans and perhaps even control them.

Black Manta's own knowledge of Atlanteans and their new king means he's the perfect man to lead field operations for N.E.M.O., and while Stephen Shin might be content enough to simply learn about Atlantis, you can be sure that Black Manta has something more sinister in mind. He's consumed with exacting revenge against Arthur for killing his father, and N.E.M.O. would be just another means to an end to make that happen. But why stop there? The organization could also pave the way for Black Manta to deliver a blow against Atlantis itself. N.E.M.O. wouldn't be big enough to wage a large-scale war against Atlantis, but through subterfuge and sabotage, it could weaken the nation's foundation, just like its comic book counterpart did.

Now that Jason Momoa's Aquaman has transitioned from loner to monarch, he has countless people watching his back. It would already be a challenging prospect for Black Manta to fight our intrepid hero a third time, but now it'll be incredibly difficult for him to get anywhere near Arthur with all those soldiers protecting him. Having Stephen Shin on his side is welcome, but it's going to take numbers and resources for Black Manta to stand a better chance of victory than he did in Aquaman. Through N.E.M.O., that can happen.

Stephen Shin, on the other hand, is the unknown factor. He has a conflicted relationship with Arthur Curry in the comics, but he never evolved into a full-blown super villain. Granted, we have no idea if he's had any prior contact with Arthur in the DCEU, but even if he hasn't, it's hard to tell whether he simply wants to find Atlantis for academic purposes or if he also has malevolent intentions in mind. His new alliance with Black Manta suggests the latter is more likely, but either way, N.E.M.O. would be beneficial for him. However, if a time comes that Shin doesn't agree with Black Manta's goals for N.E.M.O., that could be the turning point that dissolves his alliance with the helmeted foe and lead him to seek help from Aquaman.

While it's difficult to argue that Solo: A Star Wars Story wasn't a Star Wars movie with a much lighter tone, an awful lot of people get killed in it. In fact, the vast majority of named characters of any significant size don't survive the film. The exceptions, of course, are those characters that we knew from the beginning would make it because they appear in films that take place later in the chronology. According to screenwriter Jon Kasdan, the fact that the audience knew that some characters, like the title hero, would survive was exactly why the decision was made to kill off others. The writers felt the only way to keep the audience guessing was to get them invested in new characters, and then make it clear they might not make it. According to Kasdan...

We knew that because we had a hero who was not going to die we needed to try to populate the movie with characters that we were invested in. And then, they're both killed in sort of sudden ways and that gives a little more tension to the relationships he has, you know? Where you think, well, anyone we don't know if they are in another movie could go.

Early in the film, Han Solo finds himself teaming up with Beckett and his crew to pull a job in order to steal valuable hyperspace fuel. The team consists of Beckett, Val, and a multi-armed alien named Rio Durant. However, by the end of the heist, both Val and Rio have died, leaving Beckett with only the new recruits of Han and Chewbacca.

Of course, we know from the beginning that whatever else happens, Han, Chewbacca, and also Lando, will all be fine, so there's no drama as it regards their fate. Jon Kasdan says in one of the bonus features attached to the brand new Blu-ray for Solo: A Start Wars Story that this lack of drama for those characters meant that it had to be found in other characters.

And overall, it works. By killing off Rio and Val at the beginning, the audience has to wonder what could happen to other characters like Beckett, Dryden Voss, and Qi'ra. We've never seen them in other Star Wars movies, so they might survive but they could just as easily die. Two of those characters, in fact, do die by the end, but Qi'ra survives, though she could have just as easily died, especially since we know the movie had no problem killing people off. You spend the rest of the movie wondering how things will go because the precedent has already been set.
