The Crimes Of Grindelwald Did Have The Lowest Opening In The Harry Potter Universe, But There's Still Good News

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was the number one movie at the box office this past weekend. Having said that, it wasn't exactly a smashing success. The sequel brought in just over $62 million, which is an all-time low for an opening weekend for the Wizarding World franchise. Having said that, there is an upside, as the film did bring in nearly $200 million more around the world, which, when combined with the domestic take, as well as the over $800 million that the first Fantastic Beasts movie did, puts the larger franchise over the $1 billion mark.

This fact does spotlight one thing that seems fairly clear about the Fantastic Beast movies as a whole, they're not really meant for us. The first movie in the franchise did over $800 million around the world, but less than 30% of that total came from North America. The rest came from overseas, with significant numbers coming from China, South Korea, and somewhat unsurprisingly, Great Britain.

Even if Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ends up being the lowest grossing movie ever based on a J.K. Rowling story, it doesn't mean the movie is going to actually have that small a box office total. If the international numbers continue for the next few weeks, the movie is going to be fine, even if the North American numbers don't go anywhere.

And with a couple of major releases coming up during the long Thanksgiving weekend, including Creed II and the very family friendly Ralph Breaks the Internet, it would seem likely that the new Fantastic Beasts is going to have some stiff competition.

It does make one wonder just what the issue us with these film and the domestic audience. Even the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them didn't have a massive opening weekend. It's not like all the crazy Harry Potter fans rushed to check out the new film and then went home disappointed. Many were clearly uninterested when this whole franchise started. Is the North American audience just done with the Wizarding World overall? Are we just not interested in the adventures of a character not named Harry Potter while others are? If so, why is that?

At the same time, the box office has been changing and becoming more global overall. North America is still the biggest, and most important, box office region in the world for Hollywood movies, but countries like China have already become major secondary markets and many analysts feel that the nation will eventually top the U.S. when it comes to box office dollars.

While Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald might be off to a slow start, it doesn't seem like the movie is in any real trouble. We're still going to get three more movies in the series and they'll probably continue to do well overseas, even if the domestic crowd doesn't care about them as much.

New Shazam! Clip Shows Billy Figuring Out How To Transform

Coming off the discovery of the MCUs introduction of the little-known origin story of Carol Danvers earlier this month, moviegoers will soon discover 14-year-old Billy Batsons fantastic abilities when he becomes Shazam! next weekend. What looks to be especially fun about DCs next entry is audiences will get to learn of the superheros powers as he does and through the eyes of two teenage boys.

More early looks of Shazam! have been making its way to us in anticipation for the upcoming release, including this new clip teasing how Billy Batsons transformation into an adult superhero works. Check it out:

The minute snippet from the film seems to take place shortly after Billy Batson (Asher Angel) becomes Shazam (Zachary Levi) for the first time, and is sneaking back into his foster home with Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) in the evening, hoping to go unnoticed. One of his foster sisters Darla, played by Faithe Herman (who This Is Us fans may notice as Annie Pearson) sees the superheros flashy costume and is about to react before Shazam! covers her mouth.

Shazam then attempts to explain to Darla of the unbelievable circumstances. Hes Billy and a wizard approached him and made him look like well Zachary Levi in a muscly red and yellow suit. He says the word shazam again, which is what made him a superhero in the first place and he is turned back to his teenage self much to his surprise.

Its a fun explainer about how Billy will learn of one of his many abilities and means he will most definitely be able to switch in and out of his alter ego throughout the film. With little Darla in on the secret, I can see the movie having some funny moments with her where she tries to keep the secret but lets things slip, since she said shes moderate at keeping them.

As other early looks of Shazam! Have shown, Billy and Freddy will also learn about Shazams ability of flight, super strength, super speed, invulnerability and power to summon lightning in some hilarious ways that will get them geeking out a fun change of pace from the typical hero unphased by the amazing things they can do.

While most fans will have to wait a little longer to see Shazam! in theaters, early critical reactions have been glowing: CinemaBlends own Sean OConnell gave the film a delightful 4 out of 5 stars. Preview screenings also made a splash with $3.3 million in earnings, beating out Aquamans preview numbers.

Shazam! seems to be doing a successful job of peaking the interest of fans and we cant wait to see the pair of foster kids learn the scope of the superheros fun scope of abilities and take on the films villian Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong) when the film hits theaters on April 5.

Could Jamie Dornan Come Back For Another Fifty Shades Movie? Here's What He Says

This weekend brings with it the debut of Fifty Shades Freed, the climax of the worldwide phenomenon. The cinematic adaptations of the best-selling novels by author E.L. James have grossed almost a billion dollars worldwide and Fifty Shades Freed is poised to win its opening weekend. While Fifty Shades Freed is ostensibly the trilogy-capper, as with any popular franchise, there are always questions about a potential continuation as well as future installments. But it seems that if there is to be another Fifty Shades movie, it will be without star Jamie Dornan. When discussing the possibility of more films after Fifty Shades Freed, the actor had this to say:

I don't think there's any chance. I mean, there's no other books. Erika wrote the first two books from Christian's perspective, but I guess we've already seen, done those films -- the same stories -- so they won't do that again. Unless Erika keeps writing; but, Dakota and I, particularly me, are getting too old for this.

Man, have two actors ever seemed less turned on to be a part of a successful franchise than Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan? It sounds like Jamie Dornan is done with Fifty Shades regardless and is happy to be moving on. Apparently wearing 'wee-bags' and filming awkward sex scenes is not something he wants to make a career out of. The actor also makes a good point here on Lorraine that there are no other books. Should the franchise continue, E.L. James would have to write more books. Or, depending on the rights and the author's protectiveness, scripts would need to be commissioned to force this franchise to continue.

E.L. James has already released two other books in a planned trilogy that are sort of the other half of the Fifty Shades books. These novels, titled Grey and Darker are the same stories as the first two Fifty Shades books, just told from Christian Grey's perspective instead of Ana's. The reason this can work as a book series and not as a film is because of the differences in the mediums. The Fifty Shades novels that became a phenomenon were written from Anastasia Steele's perspective and words on a page are only telling the reader what the author wants them to know. So it is possible to write the other half of a story from a different character's perspective and have the story seem fresh. But the films allow us to see the interactions between the lovers more objectively and thus there is no need for a Christian focused series because we've more or less already seen it.

While Jamie Dornan and presumably Dakota Johnson are done with the Fifty Shades films, I wouldn't close the book on the franchise just yet. Despite diminishing box office returns these films still make plenty of money and despite the critical lambasting they receive there is clearly an appetite for these types of stories. I could totally see E.L. James writing more books with new characters and Fifty Shades becoming something of an anthology of softcore fantasies. Or who knows, with Fifty Shades Freed incorporating action and thriller elements, maybe this franchise will turn into erotic, globe-trotting adventure films. The possibilities are endless.
