Im A Female Critic, And To Be Honest, I Didnt Love Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel hits theaters this weekend, and although a huge faction of people have not caught the movie yet, theres already been a lot of the conversation around the movie, specifically about gender and movie criticism.

From people trolling the film on Rotten Tomatoes to conversations about representation to worries from some (who havent even seen the movie) that it would perhaps have too much of a social agenda, the chatter around Captain Marvel has seemingly been about everything other than the movie itself. In fact, it has even sparked conversations about whether all or at least half of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes should be from female critics.

At the time of this writing, Captain Marvel is currently running at an 83% in critical reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Although the film hasnt achieved the heights of say Black Panther (97%), Thor: Ragnarok (92%) or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1 (91%), thats a very respectable score, with both positive and negative reviews coming from both men and womenalthough just counting the first page of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, there were 16 men to 4 women represented.

Its a refrain weve actually heard from celebrities before. Most notably in recent memory, the cast of Oceans Eight coming out to discuss the fact they felt the movie wasnt made for men and that perhaps male critics didnt get it. There's a thought that perhaps only women should be responsible for reviews for movies starring women.

To be honest, however, Im a female critic and I didnt really love Captain Marvel.

I think Captain Marvel does a fine enough job of setting up the characters origin story. The de-aging wasnt half bad either, and there were some laughs to be had. Its a totally acceptable movie and I would have said that in my review.

But I didnt review Captain Marvel for CinemaBlend. In fact, our reviewer, who is male, thought the movie was delightful. He didnt have the problems with the weak jokes, the unidentifiable tone and even the music that I had. He enjoyed the origin story and really admired the digital work that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck put in, noting its absolutely a blockbuster to which the industry should look as it's doing its part to try and reinvent the wheel.

To me, however, Marvel has set the bar high with its movies. Avengers: Infinity War was astonishing and had such a shocking and spry script that capably showcased a wide variety of characters. The wonder of Wakanda and even the rhinos bought to life an incredible new world in Black Panther. Thor and The Guardians and even Ant-Man have separated themselves out by having fun and tonally different takes than anything else in the MCU or in other blockbuster flicks.

Captain Marvel is missing a lot of those different types of sparks and for me it didnt offer anything on its own terms that is new or exceptional or necessary to see on the big screen. Its a fine enough movie, but especially because I think the expectations were so high with Marvels first lead superheroine, I do think some people will be disappointed. I was.

Im paid to live, breathe and opine movies, to be moved by them, to take joy in all kinds of visual wonders and funny moments, to immerse myself in gripping dialogue and action. I spend a lot of time in front of a screen and I see a lot of bad movies as well as good ones. Sometimes I agree with the consensus. Sometimes I dont.

But what I would really hate would be to be to be told that I dont deserve to have an opinion on Creed II because boxing movies are not really in my wheelhouse. Or that I dont get to feel lukewarm about Oceans Eight because Im a woman.

A long time ago, people were familiar with their neighborhood movie critics. They might know if action or rom-coms were not in that critics wheelhouse and take those opinions with a little bit of salt based on their own personal taste.

In the vastness of the Internet, one persons voice may not matter as much as the collective whole, but they should still all be shared.

I think at the end of the day, what we all really want is probably the same thing. Diversity in movie criticism is only going to grow our understanding of what works and doesnt in movies by leaps and bounds. It could even lead to different movies finding success or Hollywood tackling different projects.

But only half of getting to that place is opportunity. The other half is respectfully allowing everyone to have a voice, whether or not its the right type of movie for that person.

Sometimes just one space franchise is enough. Mark Hamill is famous for his role as Luke Skywalker is the massively successful and popular Star Wars franchise, but recent news indicated that he might be interested in joining another cosmic series: Guardians of the Galaxy. It certainly helped that Hamill is next door neighbors with director James Gunn, and fans got even more excited when the two of them had dinner together. Alas, it sounds like Hamill is okay with just remaining a fan of the Guardians, and recently explained why he was okay with sitting this one out.

So, I like the movies, They're fine. But I'm happy to be in the audience, there's a lot less pressure. That's why I like Solo and Rogue One so much. There was 100% less Hamill, so I didn't have any sort of anxiety. I could just be in the audience, it was great.

Earlier this year, a fan reached out to James Gunn to request that Mark Hamill receive a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Instead of just ignoring a tweet that he probably gets all the time, Gunn actually responded and revealed that he and Hamill live next door to each other and could talk it out over a cup of coffee. Then Mark Hamill sent Twitter into a tizzy when he responded to the conversation, calling himself an "unemployed actor." Gunn and Hamill then seemed to legitimately set up a time to meet, leaving fans excited that Mark Hamill might join the MCU.

As it turns out, the two of them did end up having dinner, but they didn't talk about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at all. On the red carpet of the Saturn Awards, Collider asked Mark Hamill what the two of them discussed, and Hamill stated that Vol. 3 wasn't on the menu that night. However, it sounds like that's totally fine with Hamill, who would prefer to be a member of the audience. It's a lot more relaxing to just enjoy the movie, rather than bite your nails every time you come on screen.

Well, Hamill might not be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after all, but it's not like the guy is lacking in franchises. Luke Skywalker might have met his end in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but there's always the chance that he appears as a Force ghost in Episode IX. Obviously, that would be a big spoiler so no one has come out and said that but anything is possible!

Despite his other work and serious roles in indie films from auteurs like David Cronenberg, actor Robert Pattinson is still best known for playing sparkly vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise. That perception is likely part of the backlash to the reports that he is in talks to play the Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves Batman film. That aversion to his casting is not shared by fellow Twilight alum Dakota Fanning, who supports Robert Pattinson in the role, as she explained:

I think it's awesome. I love Rob, and he's great, and he's great in whatever he does.

While speaking with Variety at the Cannes Film Festival where her new film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is premiering, Dakota Fanning expressed real confidence in the talents of Robert Pattinson to be great in whatever role he takes on. That includes Batman, and Dakota Fanning seemed to be genuinely excited and happy for her fellow Twilight alum.

Although I wouldnt expect Dakota Fanning to boo the casting of her former co-star or advocate people sign a silly petition (those always work) to have him removed from the role, it is nice to hear that she has positive feelings about him and what he can do. And she would know. The actress starred in three Twilight movies as Jane, a member of the villainous Volturi coven set against Robert Pattinsons Edward and Kristen Stewarts Bella.

So she has gotten to know him and seen his acting in person on set, giving her greater insight into his abilities. Its also possible that shes actually seen him in more than just the Twilight movies and has a better knowledge of his work and range as an actor and that informs her faith in him playing Batman.

Robert Pattinson has Dakota Fanning in his corner, but as is seemingly the case with every big time superhero casting, hell have to prove himself to many fans. Rightly or wrong, he is still known mainly for Twilight-- even though he has proven to be much more than that in plenty of other films. But even if fans acknowledge he is a good actor, they may still not see him as Batman.

Thats understandable and like Ben Affleck before him in the role or Heath Ledger as Joker or Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, it will take time if that acceptance is to happen at all. Now may be the right time for him to take on the role though, with DC trying new things and the details about Matt Reeves exact vision for his movie The Batman still under wraps.

It's also important to note that we also still dont know with 100% certainty that Robert Pattinson will be Bruce Wayne in The Batman. That seems to be the way things are trending but until the deal is final its not final and other reports say that Nicholas Hoult is still in the running for the part. Whoever gets it, hell be possibly be facing off with Penguin and Catwoman, two of the films reported villains.

The Batman is scheduled for release on June 25, 2021. While we await that, there are plenty of other movies hitting theaters this summer, check them out in our 2019 Release Schedule.
