A Stalin Reference Was Reportedly Removed From Hellboy In Russia

Every now and then, youll come across an instance where a movie has been edited because its airing in a particular country, like how some of the entries on Steve Rogers to-do list in 2014s Captain America: The Winter Solider were different depending on where the film was released. In the case of the Hellboy reboot, its Russian release was apparently adjusted so that a reference to Joseph Stalin was replaced with a different notorious historical figure being mentioned.

If youve already seen Hellboy, you might recall a moment when the eponymous protagonist mentions how the one-eyed with Baba Yaga, one of the movies side villains, once tried to resurrect Joseph Stalin. Here are his exact words:

I recall you tried to raise Stalin's ghost from a necropolis.

However, per BBC News, Russian moviegoers heard this line instead:

I want to remind you, you tried to raise Hitler's spirit from a necropolis.

Thats right, rather than reference the man who led the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1953, the Russian version of Hellboy decided to mention Adolph Hitler instead, another dictator from the mid-20th century. This isnt the first time that a movie in Russia has had to deal with Stalin-related censorship, as last year the UK comedy The Death of Stalin was denied release in the country because it was deemed disgusting and extremist.

Going off social media responses, evidently many Russian viewers were not pleased with Stalins name being replaced with Hitlers in Hellboy. It was also noted online that Baba Yaga mentioning Hitler doesnt really make any sense since shes a Russian folklore character.

For the English screenings of Hellboy in Russian, Stalins name was bleeped and the subtitles included Hitlers name instead. This was one of only two ways that Hellboy was censored in Russia, the other being a Russian curse word that Grigori Rasputin (another Russian historical figure) utters being removed.

While the exact reasoning for why Stalins name was taken out of Hellboy, BBCs article also noted that a recent poll showed that 70% of Russians believe Stalin played a positive role in Russian history. So this could just be an instance of not wanting to portray such a notable individual in a negative light.

In any case, the rest of Hellboy played the same in Russia as it did domestically. Hitting theaters last week, the reboot has taken a beating both critically and commercially, collecting a lot of negative reviews (it ranks at 15% on Rotten Tomatoes and has a C CinemaScore) and making only $15 million worldwide so far. There was also reportedly some major drama that went on during production.

E.L. James Admits People Are Already Circling Fifty Shades Author's The Mister For Movie Rights

E.L. James, the author of the Fifty Shades of Grey series, has a new book out on the shelves called The Mister. Even if you've never read the books, there's a strong chance that you are at least a little familiar with the three Fifty Shades movies. They went on to gross a combined $1 billion at the box office, and it sounds like some studios are hoping for lightning to strike twice. James claims that studios are already circling a movie adaptation of The Mister.

The author's three Fifty Shades books followed the often dicey romance of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. While the soap opera drama they faced often placed obstacles in their path, the series is really known for and associated with sex. Things get real steamy between these two, helping to propel the series to worldwide success.

E.L. James' newest book, The Mister, is similar in concept to Fifty Shades. The novel follows an entirely different couple named Maxim Trevelyan and Alessia Demachi. Maxim is a wealthy playboy aristocrat who falls for the mysterious Alessia, whose only possession is her dark past. And they totally have sex, though it's apparently more vanilla than Fifty Shades.

The Mister has only been out for about a week, but it's already apparently gotten attention from movie studios. E.L. James told the Metro that she has been approached by studios for a film adaptation, but didn't get any deeper than that. In her words:

People are asking, yes. I have been asked. It is a big commitment.

Obviously, that doesn't mean that a movie is storming into theaters next year. It sounds like conversations have only just started and there's no guarantee that a movie will even happen. I suppose some of that will depend on book sales, but that's already off to a good start. The Mister has sold 52,674 physical copies in its first week.

For the record, it doesn't sound like The Mister is well-liked at the moment. Critics gave the book negative reviews, but it's not like the Fifty Shades films were getting Oscar nominations. Critics usually weren't fans of the movies, but that didn't stop it from making money. Just because the book isn't getting good reviews now doesn't mean that a future movie won't.

It's still too early to tell if a movie about The Mister is in the cards, but so far the signs seem positive. A Very Different Character Almost Went To Canto Bight In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Canto Bight played a large part in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, and one of the main purposes the casino planet served was to show us a building relationship between Rose and Finn. (Well, that and to bring in more ideas about The Force at the very end.) Regardless, when Rian Johnson was putting together his ideas for the movie, Rose wasn't originally the character picked to go with Finn on that mission. In fact, in a recent Q&A, Johnson revealed that it was originally going to be Poe Dameron, but that quickly changed when Johnson realized that Poe's scenes were pretty boring. He said about the Poe Dameron scenes:

[He was] hardest to write for, honestly, just in terms of figuring out what their story was going to be was Poe. Luke was obviously the hardest overall, but besides Luke, Poe was the trickiest. Poe is such a clear-cut, simple character in [Episode VII] because he's Oscar Isaac and he's the most charismatic man in the universe and he's just rad. Honestly, I actually wrote, in the very first draft I wrote of it, Poe went with Finn on the mission to Canto Bight, and the two of them were going to be together on the mission. And it didn't work at all because those two get along so well and it'd be really boring.

In The Last Jedi, Finn leaves with new character Rose to Canto Bight to find someone who can help with a crucial infiltration mission to save the Resistance. Meanwhile, Poe stays behind to deal with Vice Admiral Holdo and stall until the duo's return. Some people felt that Poe's time would have been better spent with Finn bro-ing it up on Canto Bight. Apparently, writer-director Rian Johnson felt that way too and said during a Q & A with Collider that in the very first draft of the script, Poe was the one going to the casino-oriented planet. However, because Finn and Poe get along so well, the scenes didn't work. You need friction to make fire, and with no conflict between the two, it makes sense that those scenes felt as if they were going nowhere.

Although the scenes didn't work for every viewer, in that regard, Rose going on the mission works, because she and Finn don't get along and have different views on the war, which creates the backbone for one of the key themes of the movie.

Rian Johnson also says that Poe was one of the trickiest characters to write because he wasn't a very deep character in The Force Awakens. He was just a really cool and charismatic pilot, which was fine for that movie, but not very useful for The Last Jedi. That's what led Johnson to dig deeper and create Poe's arc of going from a hero to a leader.

Can the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise survive without Captain Jack Sparrow? Or, more precisely, Johnny Depp as said captain? Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were recently hired by Disney to work on a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. It was rumored -- fairly assumed -- that meant Johnny Depp would not be involved. Disney's president of production, Sean Bailey, had this to say when asked if Pirates can survive without Depp:

We want to bring in a new energy and vitality. I love the [Pirates of the Caribbean] movies, but part of the reason Paul and Rhett are so interesting is that we want to give it a kick in the pants. And that's what I've tasked them with.

Savvy? That's being taken as Sean Bailey confirming to THR that Johnny Depp won't be involved in the reboot. That was understood to be the case anyway. Anything that did include him would be more like Pirates 6 and not a real reboot.

That doesn't answer the question of whether the world wants a reboot, and only the box office would answer the question of whether Pirates as a franchise can survive without Johnny Depp.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise started in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl. After five movies, it has made more than $4.5 billion worldwide. There's still talk of Pirates of the Caribbean 6, which is separate from this reboot talk. Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales told a sad tale of bad reviews and domestic disappointment, but it did make plenty of money overseas. Still, Pirates 6 talk appears to be on the backburner, for now, as this reboot script takes form.

So far, all we have are rumors. There's talk that new pirate Redd might replace Jack Sparrow, as much as one could ever do that, as a lead character of the reboot. But that is a pure rumor.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has become synonymous with Captain Jack Sparrow. He has been in every film, and it's hard to imagine more films without him. That doesn't mean they can't work, but it's going to take some convincing, not only on the domestic front, but especially in the all-important international market.

Johnny Depp has struggled at the domestic box office of late -- and struggled in the news, with some domestic issues of his own -- but the foreign box office is always there for him. Hell, they even sat through Mortdecai -- giving it $40 million when the North American box office wrote it off with only $7.5 million. They gave The Lone Ranger $171M to the domestic $90M.

So I'm not convinced yet that the Pirates franchise can survive at the box office without Johnny Depp. They may make a fantastic reboot. I may personally love it. But unless they make it on a microbudget, it will probably be tough to make a profit without Johnny Depp's name and Captain Jack Sparrow's face splashed on a poster. Still, risks are worth taking, even a partial risk that wants to have it both ways -- milking a franchise while trying something brand new with it.

Whatever happens with the Pirates reboot and/or Pirates 6, it's not happening anytime too soon. Here's what's playing in theaters as we close out 2018, and the many films ahead at the box office in 2019.
