Happy Death Day 2 Is Definitely Happening

The slasher genre got the Groundhog Day treatment last year with the release of Blumhouse's Happy Death Day. The PG-13, college-set horror thriller turned into a surprise hit with audiences and paved the way for a sequel to go into development. Now it looks like the wheels are finally starting to turn on Happy Death Day 2, and the sequel will bring in some new characters to interact with old favorites from the original.

New details related to Happy Death Day 2 have finally emerged, and it looks like the sequel is sticking reasonably close to the original. Specifically, Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard are both set to return to the roles of Tree Gelbman and Carter, respectively. In addition to the returning members of the ensemble, Happy Death Day 2 has also reportedly tapped Life of Pi star Suraj Sharma and American Horror Story actress Sarah Yarkin as newcomers. On top of these new and returning actors, Deadline also reports that original Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon will return behind the camera.

From a plot point of view, it's also worth mentioning that it sounds like not much time will have passed between the end of the original Happy Death Day and the start of Happy Death Day 2. Jessica Rothe has spoken out about the plot of the slasher follow-up and mentioned that it would directly follow the events of the sequel, leaving minimal gap between the stories in the vain of Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II. Such a trope is not uncommon in the horror genre, as it is quite similar to how Halloween II's opening scene directly lines up with the finale of John Carpenter's original film. Moreover, it has also been said that the sequel will take time to answer lingering questions from the first film and further explain the time loop phenomenon that has plagued Tree's life.

Of course, it is hardly surprising to see Blumhouse move to a Happy Death Day sequel so quickly after the first film's release. The horror-centric subset of Universal has seen great success in recent years with franchises like The Purge and M. Night Shyamalan's long-awaited (yet unexpected) Unbreakable sequel Split. Now, looking ahead to the next couple of years, Happy Death Day 2 joins an assortment of sequels that includes Halloween, The First Purge and Glass.

Halloween: Resurrection Actress Was Kidnapped And Held For Ransom

It's a weird, crazy world out there, even for actors in TV and movies. For instance, take actor Daisy McCracken, a cast member in the 2002 installment of the Halloween franchise: Halloween: Resurrection. As it turns out, last year saw she and another actor being subjected to violent and inhumane treatment, as two men kidnapped them, with weapons and ransom demands in tow. Indictments being handed now, so details on the case have been revealed. And they're pretty rough.

Variety broke the news pertaining to the case, which laid out how Daisy McCracken and fellow actor Joseph Capone were abducted from her home last May, and taken to another location. Out of the two, Capone was treated the worst, as he was repeatedly kicked and beaten when trying to protect his fellow hostage, eventually being stripped naked and held in a bathtub for 30 hours without food. The ordeal's endgame was apparently a $10,000 ransom that the captors demanded Daisy McCracken withdraw from her bank the next day, as well as her 2011 Lexus, which was stolen in the process. McCracken called the police once she was returned home, which lead to the investigation currently reported.

Even for someone with an extensive resume in the horror genre, this entire happening must have been traumatic to Daisy McCracken, as even having faced off against Halloween's Michael Myers isn't enough to prepare a person for true villainy and harm exhibited by her kidnappers.

You'd think that these kidnappers would have watched a couple more movies before their attempted crime, because apparently they failed to conceal their tracks effective enough so as not to be captured. They were promptly arrested, and now Daisy McCracken and Joseph Capone can attempt to seek justice after their traumatic deal.

Daisy McCraken has most recently been seen on the TV show Jane The Virgin, as well as the motion picture Delirium, which could be how the actor was targeted for such heinous acts. Or, the indicted parties may be such fans of the Halloween series that they have seen Halloween: Resurrection one too many times, and thought she'd be a worthy target. Whatever the case, we would like to extend our sincerest hopes that both Daisy McCracken and Joseph Capone are recovering, and that their captors are now in custody and will be given due process through the justice system.

Opening the Spider-Man franchise to a multiverse of possibilities, much as Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse does, is both a fantastic possibility and a horrifying hypothetical. At least, that's what it sounded like when producer / co-writer Phil Lord was asked about what sort of opportunities this sort of movie unlocked for the Spider-verse, and what was exciting about this bold undertaking. Specifically, Lord had the following to say about how he felt about what he and the creative team had done:

If it's successful, and you guys like it, we're gonna get stuck making thirty of these. Because there are so many possibilities, and I think it's an apt metaphor for what it's like to be 13. There's so many different ways your life can go, there's so many people in Miles' life that represent a different pathway. So, I think that's why it felt organic to his story to present him with a lot of different examples of how you could live with this spider-bite. And when you see the rest of the movie, this kid really synthesizes all of these different influences into how he's going to do it.

This subject was raised by moderator Josh Horowitz, during Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse's panel presentation at New York Comic Con this weekend, and CinemaBlend was on hand to hear this discussion, which took place after the first 35 minutes of the film were shown to the audience. While we only saw two of the Peter Parker variants that Miles Morales meets up with throughout the film's events, the film sets up the importance of the multiverse approach quite clearly in a short amount of time. And to Phil Lord's point, there really are a multitude of approaches that could be taken should this project become a megahit.

Not only will Miles Morales's story be a viable franchise to revisit, should Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse take off, but any number of the other spider people could probably get their own adventures adapted as solo projects. In particular, one would assume that Spider-Gwen would give way to a separate franchise, which could then lead to a Spider-Gwen v. Gwenpool sort of situation, if the rights play out the right way. Plus, if Phil Lord and Chris Miller wanted to really swing their creative weight around in a truly impressive manner, they could try to set up a separate series of films following Nicholas Cage's Spider-Man Noir adventures.

As much as Phil Lord will admit he was being facetious, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse tells a story so unique to the Spider-Man canon, and with such a wide range of characters to follow, that it really could spin off its own universe of sequels. So there's no limit to what Miles Morales, Peter Parker and all the other web-slingers could be doing in theaters near you.

No matter what, if any of these characters progress through future films, it'll technically count as a sequel in the canon, seeing as everyone started out in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. In short: be careful what you say, Phil Lord, as 36 more of these films would be a very easy, and potentially extremely satisfying, possibility.
