Destroyer Trailer: Check Out Nicole Kidman's Intense, Oscar-Worthy Performance

We've reached the time of year where the films and the performances that are likely to get noticed by the annual awards begin to come out. One thing that those giving out awards like to see frequently is an actor that takes on a role unlike those they have done before. Something that transforms them physically and emotionally. If that's what is going to win the next Best Actress Oscar, then Nicole Kidman may have just become the front-runner. Check out the first trailer for Destroyer.

Destroyer follows an LAPD cop who, as a young officer was placed undercover with a gang. The experience has had long-lasting consequences on the officer which come to the forefront when the leader of the gang emerges many years later. In the trailer, we see the story shift back and forth between the two time periods and we get glimpses of what the character was forced to do, and what she may have done by choice, in order to integrate herself into the gang. And we see the woman she has become now as a result.

Transformation isn't enough of a word to describe what we see from Nicole Kidman here. When the trailer shifted from the opening scene of the woman with the baby, to the next moment with an older woman speaking to a teenage girl, I honestly didn't realize at first that the latter was Nicole Kidman.

The next moments didn't help when we see that the woman is a hard-boiled cop. It's not exactly the sort of role we're used to seeing the actress in. It wasn't until several seconds of not seeing Nicole Kidman that I realized I was seeing her the entire time. Between the look and the accent, she disappears into the role.

Of course, this is only a trailer so it only shows us some of what Destroyer will bring us and it's been edited to show us something specific. Still, the trailer includes quotes from numerous critics who have been lucky enough to already see the film. While those can sometimes be taken out of context, it certainly looks like they are singing the praises of both Kidman and the movie as a whole.

These sorts of transformations frequently get awards show notice because playing against type is the most obvious proof that somebody is "acting." It happens when actors known for comedies transition into serious roles, though this feels more like a Charlize Theron in Monster sort of transformation.

Destroyer is currently touring the festival circuit. It will have its North American wide release on Christmas Day. While Christmas is a popular release date for films, as it's a popular day for many to go to the movies, I'm not sure this is quite the festive seasonal offering people will be looking for. Having said that, it certainly looks like it will be a movie worth checking out.

While nobody does the cinematic universe quite like Marvel, the second most successful cinematic universe currently running on the big screen right now might actually be the Conjuring franchise. The horror movies have been incredibly successful with numerous spinoffs and now now the third film in the core franchise is getting underway.

Co-star Vera Farmiga posted an image to Twitter of her and her on-screen husband Patrick Wilson, as the pair sat down for the table read of the script for The Conjuring 3. Check it out.

Horror fans will be happy to see these two together again, because when it happens it almost certainly means a good horror movie is on the way. Both of the previous Conjuring movies have been both box office hits and critical successes. There's certainly going to be a high expectation from fans that the third entry will be another winner.

Of course, The Conjuring 3 does have one major change that will make it noticeably different than the previous entries. James Wan will not be directing. While Wan is still acting as a producer of the film, Michael Chaves of the recent The Curse of La Llorona, will be handling those responsibilities behind the camera.

Fans of The Conjuring movies won't have to wait until the new movie's 2020 release date to get a chance to see Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga together on screen. The next film in the larger universe, Annabelle Comes Home, is set to open later this month and both actors will appear as their characters from the main franchise in the film.

Still, one can certainly guess that most fans are really waiting to see The Conjuring 3, the main movies have been the real winners with both fans and critics, with the exception of The Nun, which is somehow the second highest grossing movie domestically in the series even though it also received the worst reviews. Globally, The Nun is actually the highest grossing movie in the franchise.

While the Conjuring movies don't necessarily put up revolutionary box office numbers, as fairly simple horror movies they tend to have comparatively small budgets, meaning they actually end up being more profitable than much larger tentpole blockbusters.

Filming should be getting underway for The Conjuring 3 very soon but fans will still have to wait a while to actually see the end result. The film isn't set to open until September of 2020.

How The LEGO Movie 2 Got That Awesome Celebrity Cameo

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains a very minor spoiler for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. If you dont want to know anything before your screening, continue with caution!The cast of The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is absolutely stacked featuring a voice cast that includes Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Tiffany Haddish, Stephanie Beatriz, Will Ferrell, Charlie Day, Nick Offerman, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and many more. Still, though, the film does find its ways to surprise you with cameos, and arguably the best is the surprise appearance by Bruce Willis.

He only appears in two scenes in the feature, but it was enough of a surprise that I felt compelled to ask writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller about it at the recent LEGO Movie 2 Los Angeles press day. They detailed not only how the inspiration for the idea came about, but how they actually got Bruce Willis to come aboard:

Phil Lord: It started with, 'Okay, well, Lucy is going to take her hair off.'Chris Miller: 'Who does she think she looks like?' And that was the first one that came to mind. We're like, 'Well we could ask him.' And he said yes, crazily enough. And it was really funny to record him when he was sort of like, 'Wait, what's happening here?' And we're like, 'We're just going to give you a bunch of LEGO, you can take it home.Phil Lord: And he's like, 'Fantastic.'Chris Miller: And he was so delightful.

Bruce Willis has a bit of voice-over/animated movie experience on his resume, including Over The Hedge, Beavis And Butthead Do America, and the Look Whos Talking movies but his work in The LEGO Movie 2 is his first in the arena in about 13 years. As a result, it sounds like he wasnt super at home in the recording booth, but they made it work, and apparently he was additionally happy to get some free LEGOs out of the deal.

Learning how it was specifically the hair removal gag that inspired the cameo (a.k.a. the first moment Bruce Willis appears in the movie), I followed up asking about the second sequence where he shows up namely when Lucy finds him living in the vents she is trying to crawl through. This is obviously a callback to Die Hard, and perfectly fitting for a Willis-driven gag so I asked if that bit was added after the actor said yes:

Chris Miller: I think yes, that's correct.Phil Lord: Yeah. Once we had him in the booth we were like, 'We got a few things...'
