Avengers: Infinity War His Hit Another Major Box Office Milestone
After being hyped up for over three years, Avengers: Infinity War was finally released in theaters three weeks ago, and as expected, it was the biggest entry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, bringing together the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and other select superheroes to battle Thanos and his forces. Needless to say that a movie of this scale that's part of such a popular franchise has done quite well at the box office, to put it mildly. So well, in fact, that Infinity War has now surpassed 2015's Jurassic World to become the fourth highest grossing movie worldwide of all time.
Jurassic World previously rested comfortably in the #4 spot with around $1.671 billion worldwide, but as Variety reports, it's now been knocked down to fifth place due to Avengers: Infinity War reaching $1.686 billion worldwide. Domestically the Marvel movie has collected $562.9 million after 20 days, and internationally it's made $1.123 billion in three weeks, with $240.3 million of that coming from China. Infinity War now trails behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens at #3 with $2.07 billion, Titanic at #2 with $2.19 billion and Avatar holding the #1 spot with $2.79 billion.
As things stand now, Marvel Studios now has four of the highest grossing movies worldwide. Along with Avengers: Infinity War at #4, 2012's The Avengers rests at #6, Avengers: Age of Ultron at #8 and Black Panther (which came out in February) rests at #9. However, while Infinity War is still chugging along nicely in theaters, whether it will be able to knock Star Wars: The Force Awakens from its perch is debatable. Deadpool 2 opens in theaters tonight, and Solo: A Star Wars Story (a fellow Disney release), arrives next week, so these new blockbusters will draw in large crowds of moviegoers and leave Infinity War to be bumped down on the box office chart. But it's ok, because it's already had an impressive haul.

We knew going into Avengers: Infinity War that the protagonists were trying to stop Thanos from collecting all six Infinity Stones so he could become a god, but unfortunately, they failed to defeat him. With the snap of his fingers, the Mad Titan wiped out half of all life so he could bring what he saw as balance to the universe, and the surviving heroes were left in the wreckage to process the genocide that had happened. We'll reunite with these characters next year in Avengers 4 as they work to undo what Thanos has done, concluding Phase Three of the MCU with a bang. I imagine that Avengers 4 will also make a killing at the box office next year, and who knows, maybe it will end up making even more money than Infinity War.
Avengers 4 will be released in theaters on May 3, 2019, but in the meantime, Marvel fans have Ant-Man and the Wasp to look forward to on July 6, followed by Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
