Why The Avatar Sequels Will Not Fail

There were times it seemed like it was never going to happen, but with principal photography now finished, in about two years we will finally get to see the long-delayed sequel to James Cameron's 2009 mega-hit Avatar. In the years since the first film, as Avatar 2 kept getting kicked further down the road, a belief emerged which now seems to be the prevailing one regarding the Avatar sequels: that they will fail. Despite the fact that neither the return of Star Wars nor Marvel's Avengers could dethrone Avatar as the all-time worldwide box office champ, the reasons people think the Avatar sequels will fail are not hard to figure out. It'll be over a decade since the first film by the time Avatar 2 arrives, striking well after the iron was hot.

More than that, anecdotally, Avatar doesn't seem to have maintained a prominent place in the cultural zeitgeist in the way that other successful genre properties have in the years since their releases. The original and the prospective sequels appear to be viewed more with apathy than excitement. Add to all that the hugely ambitious nature of the five-film plan and the wildly expensive price tag these films will carry, and you have a recipe for failure. Yet, in acknowledgement of all those potential pitfalls for the Avatar sequels, I do not think they will fail. Far from it, I believe that they will succeed and there are several reasons to believe that the return to Pandora will be a prosperous one.

The International Box OfficeDespite being surpassed domestically by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the reason that Avatar remains number one at the all-time worldwide box office is its international take. The film made 73% of its $2.78 billion in foreign markets, and those markets have only grown since 2009.

For example, China, which is now on pace to surpass North America as the world's biggest market for movies, contributed $204 million to Avatar's bottom line. Just this year, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Venom and Ready Player One have all made more than that in the Middle Kingdom, and none of those films are even in the worldwide top 10 all time.

That bodes very well for the Avatar sequels. Even if they are met with apathy in North America, it doesn't seem likely that will be the case overseas. As the international markets have grown, we've learned more about the tastes of our foreign moviegoing friends. In many of these markets, audiences crave spectacle and escapism that translates across cultural and linguistic barriers, and thus we've increasingly seen blockbusters make the bulk of their money outside of North America.

Avatar offers blockbuster escapism on a massive scale, and with the growth of foreign markets and China in particular, I see the Avatar sequels doing gangbusters overseas, bringing in plenty of that sweet, sweet unobtanium.

James CameronTo doubt James Cameron is to order a plate of crow on which to feast when he proves you wrong. This is the guy who directed the top two highest-grossing movies of all time; one, a romantic drama in Titanic, and the other, a sci-fi adventure in Avatar. I don't think that accomplishment gets nearly the recognition it deserves. Both times he was doubted and both times he laughed all the way to the bank.

The director has proven an incredible ability to make films that astound and amaze, delighting the senses and broadening our imaginations, while having stories that connect with us on a very human and universal level. He knows audiences and has proven as much.

There is also the fact that these are sequels, James Cameron's specialty. The director is responsible for two of the greatest sequels of all time: Aliens, a sequel to someone else's property, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, a sequel to his own film, The Terminator. He saw what worked in the first film and took things in a new and exciting direction for the sequel. Avatar 2 gives him another chance to work his sequel magic.

To quote South Park's James Cameron, "James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is James Cameron." What James Cameron does is make wildly successful blockbusters that defy expectations, and I imagine that's exactly what he'll do with the Avatar sequels.

A New Story And New TechnologyPersonally, I love Ferngully: The Last Rainforest and was all for a $237 million version of it, but Avatar deserved criticism for being derivative. And despite the fact that seemingly the entire cast of the first film, including the villain, is returning for the sequels, I don't think that the next Avatar films will be retelling that same story.

We still don't know the exact plot of the Avatar sequels, but we do know that it will be a family saga about Jake Sully, Neytiri and their children, and each chapter will be part of the much larger five-film arc. We also know that James Cameron didn't work on the story for the sequels alone. He brought in a talented team of writers to help him this time around, and getting a diversity of opinion should help the sequels to tell an original story that is still unified under James Cameron's vision.

Also, part of what made the first Avatar such a phenomenon was that we had never seen anything like it. James Cameron waited a decade plus for the technology to make the first Avatar, and the result was a grand spectacle that transported audiences to a world some were actually depressed to leave when the credits rolled.

For the sequels, James Cameron will again be breaking new ground. He shot underwater, and with the advances in technology since the first film, the sequels should again raise the bar for what is possible. Domestic audience enthusiasm for 3D may have peaked with Avatar, but whether the sequels are 3D or high frame rate, there is little doubt that they will demand to be seen on the big screen, and I believe audiences will do just that to visit Pandora again.

Disney Wants Them To SucceedIt must be said that the Disney-Fox deal is not yet finalized, so things could change, but at the moment, all signs point to the purchase completing sometime next year, at which point Disney will own the rights to Avatar. So needless to say Disney wants Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 to succeed so it can make the fourth and fifth films and merchandise the hell out of this property.

Even prior to the Disney-Fox deal, the Mouse had a vested interest in Avatar due to the Pandora-The World of Avatar land at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom. The success of the Avatar sequels will drive people to the park and the existence of the park will in turn help with awareness of the property heading in to the movies.

Disney already has a four-pronged box office strategy with Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel and its live-action remakes, and Avatar could be another pillar in that portfolio. Avatar 2 arrives in December 2020, a year after Star Wars: Episode IX. If a Star Wars slowdown is really happening, Avatar could take some of the pressure of the galaxy far, far away and allow Disney to alternate holiday releases between that and Pandora.

Not everything Disney wants to succeed works. Just this year, A Wrinkle in Time and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms are evidence of that. But with Avatar, Disney, the most powerful studio in Hollywood, is taking the biggest movie of all time and running with it. I wouldn't bet against Mickey on this one.

What Domhnall Gleeson Thinks About Rian Johnson's Vision For Star Wars: The Last Jedi

When Disney and Lucasfilm decided to revive the Star Wars film series, they hired J.J. Abrams to get the ball rolling with The Force Awakens, and looking at the movie's critical and commercial performance, the relaunch was incredibly successful. Last December, The Last Jedi picked up immediately after The Force Awakens, but Rian Johnson's first contribution to a galaxy far, far away not only felt tonally different from its predecessor at times, it also included a number of twists that polarized moviegoers. Whatever your opinions about The Last Jedi are, it certainly distinguished itself as a unique entry to the Star Wars canon, and Domhnall Gleeson, a.k.a. General Hux, was pleased with how Johnson's vision for the movie turned out, particularly concerning his character. Gleeson explained:

It worked in a completely different way to how it worked in the previous film, and I think that's really cool. It takes real imagination and confidence to see what happened before -- I mean JJ knocked it out of the park with VII -- then have the confidence to say 'I'm not just going to copy what JJ did, I'm going to develop my own thing.' I just thought that was fantastic. And not unexpected I suppose, or shouldn't have been, because Rian is so distinctly his own filmmaker.

Domhnall Gleeson's Hux was among the many new main characters The Force Awakens introduced to the Star Wars universe in 2015, and he had an expanded role in The Last Jedi as he led the efforts to exact revenge on The Resistance for blowing up Starkiller Base. While reception to Hux was more mixed this time around due to the humor surrounding him and his repeated humiliations, Gleeson had no issue with his character's portrayal. But even looking beyond Hux, Gleeson's comments indicate that he liked how Rian Johnson used not only made sure The Last Jedi didn't feel like a duplicate of The Force Awakens, but also used it to steer this film series into new territory. Clearly the higher-ups at Lucasfilm agreed, because last year, it was announced that he will oversee a new Star Wars trilogy that will be separate from the Skywalker saga.

Although The Last Jedi was met with positive reception from critics, within the more passionate side of the Star Wars fan community, the debates continue about the movie's more controversial elements, including Snoke being abruptly killed off (and without revealing any of his backstory beforehand), Rey's parents being revealed as simply junk traders, and Luke Skywalker Force projecting himself from Ahch-To to Crait, among other things. The Last Jedi ended with the few surviving members of The Resistance escaping on The Millennium Falcon, and with Luke's sacrifice, they can now rebuild and become stronger than ever. While Domhnall Gleeson hasn't seen a script for Episode IX yet, he did mention during his interview with Radio Times that he's hoping that the next movie, which J.J. Abrams is directing and co-writing with Chris Terrio, will give Hux even more comedic moments.

The current Star Wars trilogy will conclude when Episode IX is released on December 20, 2019, but before that, the franchise will wind the clock back for Solo: A Star Wars Story, which opens on May 25.

The Story Behind How Fifty Shades Freed's Wedding Dress Came Together

Fifty Shades Freed smartly used the dress Dakota Johnson wore for Anastasia and Christian's wedding in all of its key marketing moments. By now the dress, with its buttoned down back and its lace overlay, is iconic. I even watched an episode of Say Yes To The Dress where a client wanted to look like Ana does on the poster for the final movie in the trilogy. The dress look came together thanks to a collaboration with Monique Lhuillier, but although the partnership was easy, actually getting the dress together was a bit of a wild ride. Costume Designer Shay Cunliffe recently revealed the story to us ahead of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Blu-ray release, and it starts on a dark and stormy night...

OK, not really, but it is rainy a lot in Vancouver, where the wedding sequence was shot. Shay Cunliffe said she had previously worked with Monique Lhuillier, and it was an easy fit for that team to help out with the bridal dress, as well as --fun fact -- the dress in Fifty Shades Darker Ana Steele wears to the masquerade ball. But the process was a long and wending one and it almost didn't come together in a timely fashion. First, however, Cunliffe says she collaborated with Dakota Johnson to get the look of the dress just right.

It really started the first time I met Dakota. I had prepared a kind of a look book of thoughts and different scenes, the way the character would develop through two movies both together, and she herself came with a Pinterest page you wanted to share with me with things that she'd been thinking. So we both were very much on the same page. We'd even rounded up some of the same images in the different look books. But she had a photo of a wedding... It was really her one thought of a wedding dress. It was really very beautiful, sexy but old-fashioned dress, shot from the back from some fashion shoot, um, with sort of a layer of fish tail, and body hugging and yet modest at the same time. And she said that was very much her image. I thought it was perfect, because Ana is kind of Jane Eyre, old-fashioned girl really, and yet a modern woman at the same time. And the audience wants it to be sexy, but you don't want to make her ridiculously sexy and forget the girl who was a virgin, like, a few storylines earlier. So we took that image as a starter. I pulled together more images, we shared them with Dakota. I then sent the kind of a little look book folder to Monique Lhuillier herself and said, 'This is what we're thinking. This is the direction we want to go.'

After talking to Monique Lhuillier, the dress was out of Cunliffe's hands. This was a bit tricky, because normally she has direct input into everything from the design to the fitting, and this time she did not. Shay Cunliffe explained how the dress almost wasn't ready by the time the rest of the Fifty Shades Freed team was set to shoot the big wedding sequence. She said:

But then it got to be a bit nerve wracking for me. I think everyone else was too busy making the movie. But on my end, I had this most important dress being long distance. I normally would've had it made by my work group, and I would've been able to take a look at it every day, and said, 'How are we doing?' We wanted a fitting very soon on this. But instead, I was like sending emails to the Monique team, saying, 'I really, really need to see this soon. I'd like to know that we're all good.' That came down to the wire. I think Monique was away doing Bride's Week in New York, just when I would rather that she would only working on my dress. [Laughs.] That was a little nail biting. I would have been more distraught except that we've had already gone through a similar experience getting the gorgeous gray satin dress made for the silver gray dress made for the masquerade ball, which had just shown up fairly close to the wire.

Then the dress came in, like all good dresses do, just in the nick of time. Shay Cunliffe also revealed to CinemaBlend that the dress only came in right before the scene was going to shoot, so there was really no way to do major fittings so that the dress fit Dakota Johnson's body, as Johnson was filming two Fifty Shades movies back-to-back in Vancouver and Monique Lhuillier's design studio was in Los Angeles, making a fitting collaboration impossible. In addition, normally when a wardrobe is made, multiple versions of a costume are created in case there is an accident, like a tear. That wasn't the case at all for the wedding dress in Fifty Shades Freed. There was one copy and one copy only. Therefore, Cunliffe told us she prayed "to the wardrobe god" that the dress would hold through all of filming. But, first, she had to worry about whether or not it would fit. She said:

I got Dakota. She was exhausted and didn't really want to do it, but I made her come from the studio, to the costume department... even though she was about to shoot a huge wedding scene the next day. I said, 'You have to come. You've just got to. If there's any problem, I've got my seamstress just standing by to fix it all night.' But she walked in, she walked into the room, she walked into the dress, and it was perfect. I think me and my assistant might have wanted to cry. We had that sort of 'Bride' moment, but it was mainly relief. It looked exquisite, and yet the character hadn't gotten lost. I think I was slightly frightened something much, much too grand was going to show up for this spirit of purity and simplicity in this character.

Luckily, Cunliffe says she was very happy with the final product, and wishes the audience had gotten to see a little more of the stuff the creative team shot.

I loved that when I saw the film. I was really happy. In truth, the entire wedding sequence was a hell of a lot of work and they sort of just use it to get the opening credits over, and we were all like, 'Dang!' But it was a great collaboration with Monique Lhuillier, who makes fabulous, slinky dresses.

If you've seen the movie, by now you know that the wedding flits by very quickly. We get to see a highlight reel of the big moments, but the story in the film really only picks up once Ana and Christian are on their honeymoon. As the story of this wedding dress shows, the creative team went to painstaking lengths to get all of the little details right in the movie.
