Atom Tickets Wants Subscribers To Break Up With MoviePass
Although MoviePass positioned itself as a major game changer for the movie ticketing industry, the subscription service has had a rough couple of days. Last Thursday night, MoviePass briefly shut down due to straight up running out of money, requiring parent company Helios and Matheson Analytics to borrow $5 million to keep MoviePass afloat. Then Mission: Impossible - Fallout, the weekend's big blockbuster, was blacked out from MoviePass, which, as CEO Mitch Lowe, said in a public statement, is no different from limited access to content on streaming platforms. Now competitor Atom Tickets has announced a sweepstakes enticing people to "break up" with MoviePass.
Officially titled the "Break Up Sweepstakes," Atom Tickets announced that this special event is meant to "help ease the pain for MoviePass members as the service suffers from repeated technical outages, blockbuster blackouts, and an uncertain future." With that in mind, participants can enter the for a chance to win 365 days of free movies (valued at $4,380) by tweeting a picture of their cut-up MoviePass card to the Atom Tickets account with the hashtag #MOVIEPAST and #ATOMSWEEPS. Atom Tickets subscribers can enter the contest starting today, and it will conclude on August 31. Those who aren't using Atom Tickets are also eligible for a special offer this week only, as if they can get a free ticket upon purchasing a ticket on the Atom Tickets mobile app using the code WEGOTYOU.
Clearly Atom Tickets is taking advantage of MoviePass' recent misfortunes by enticing MoviePass subscribers to cut ties with that service and hop aboard the Atom Tickets train. This comes at a time when MoviePass is suffering through financial troubles, a sharp contrast to last year when it lowered its prices. Last month, MoviePass implemented Peak Pricing algorithm (which is similar to Uber's surge pricing) for high-demand movies, although that also came at the same time as expanding to premium showings and the ability for a user to bring guests. It's also been announced that just like Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Christopher Robin and The Meg won't be available on MoviePass when they hit theaters in an effort to not lose more money.
It's worth noting that MoviePass isn't the only theater subscription service that has faced troubles recently, as this past weekend Sinemia dealt with its own outages due to technical issues. So obviously there are still a lot of bugs to be worked out when it comes to these movie theater subscription services. Nevertheless, as far as MoviePass goes, it's arguably the one getting the most attention, and this Atom Tickets sweepstakes is now offering incentive for MoviePass subscribers to switch to a different service.
